Follow these Search Tips to Get to Your Clinical Question Quickly!

  1. Be Specific: The more specific your search, the better the search results. For example, searching a broad term like “cancer” will not produce any results because the search is not specific to a certain type of cancer. However, searching specific key words like “treatments for lung cancer” or a full question such as “What are treatments for lung cancer?” will provide you with an exact match to your query, along with other closely related questions, leading you the answer you need.

  2. Your Question is the Key: ClinicalAccess’ search algorithm is designed to identify the question in our database that best aligns with your query. The search isn’t focused on the text of the answer because our trained Specialty Experts have already identified the specific, targeted answer to every question.

  3. Focus! You can narrow your search results by selecting one of the filter options along the left-hand side of the page to more efficiently navigate to your desired question:

    • Description
    • Epidemiology
    • Etiology
    • Diagnosis
    • Population (Pediatric/Elderly/Pregnancy)
    • Prevention
    • Prognosis
    • Treatment

  4. Spellcheck: If you are having trouble getting the question results you want, check the spelling. A small typo can yield incorrect results or no results at all!

  5. Submit a Question: We always strive to answer your clinical questions at the point of care.  In the event that you cannot find your desired question, let us know! We will respond within one business day to let you know where you can find your answer or provide you with a newly created question and answer pair that will appear live on our site within 24 hours.

Beyond the Search

ClinicalAccess makes every effort to ensure you find your question and answer quickly and effectively, and that you have all the information you need right at your fingertips. Here‛s how to get the most out of the tool:

  1. On the results page, selecting the plus sign (“+”) beside each question provides a preview of the answer. When you find the question and answer you want, you can click through to view the full answer.

  2. Queries that include medication names will yield a drug monograph on the results page. All mentions of medication within an answer are also hyperlinked to the respective drug monograph with all relevant drug information, including contraindications and dosage.

  3. The Answer Source beneath each question provides the reference, directly linked to the section from which the answer was selected on the designated Access site for further reading.

  4. All appropriate images, tables, algorithms, videos, and audio bytes are provided with the answer in an easy-to-use carousel.

  5. A convenient link to McMaster Plus Literature Service will offer a snapshot of the best evidence related to the topic of your question. You also have the option to view all of McMaster Plus’ results on a separate page by clicking “View All Results at McMaster Plus.” If your institution has a subscription to the respective journal, you can easily access the full text of the article.

  6. Related questions found directly beneath your answer offer additional questions related to your selected query. Here too, you can narrow these questions using the filter options to the left of the question list.

Editorial Policy

The core concept behind ClinicalAccess is to provide our customers with targeted, vetted answers to realistic questions that arise anytime during the course of a clinical encounter – before, during, and after seeing a patient. Our editorial strategy to meet this need is simple, but specific: Identify and amass all questions that a healthcare provider may have for any given disease state, symptom, procedure, or diagnostic test, and deliver the specific answer identified at the paragraph level from our world-renowned resources.

Our team takes a distinctive approach defined by the way providers think at the point of care. We know that many questions go unanswered during the course of a practitioner’s day. ClinicalAccess was designed from the ground up to provide specific answers to every question that could be encountered in the clinical setting.
We enlist clinically-active general and specialty physicians and nurse practitioners to thoroughly document questions that they would ask in relation to any given condition - utilizing a proprietary, highly comprehensive list of criteria to ensure every aspect of clinical care has been answered. All questions and answers are thoroughly reviewed by our team of medical professionals and approved and finalized by specialty-trained experts.

All answers are selected from the pages of McGraw-Hill Education's premier, trusted, and authoritative texts including, but not limited to, Harrison's Textbook of Internal Medicine, Hurst's The Heart, CURRENT Medical Diagnosis & Treatment, The Current Series, Tintinalli's Emergency Medicine, and Schwartz's Principles of Surgery.

The comprehensive range of topics spans the broad base of medicine – covering both common and esoteric conditions and disease states – and is designed to meet the needs of both generalists and specialists in a variety of clinical settings.

"View the current best evidence" presents current literature identified as scientifically important by the McMaster Premium Literature Service. The literature must meet rigorous criteria and be rated by frontline clinicians for relevance and newsworthiness to appear on ClinicalAccess.

Users are encouraged to suggest any questions or topics to our team for inclusion in the database. Our editorial process allows for near instant publication of new content, following expert review.
